3 reasons tile is the most evironmentally friendly finished surface available:
1) Natural Resource Conservation
- Tile is manufactured from a virtually endless supply of natural, non-living materials.
- Most tile manufacturing is closed loop meaning all non-used material (e.g. scrapes, production waste) is put back into the production process for maximum efficiency.
- More and more tile and tile installation products are made from recycled content both post-consumer and pre-consumer.  Recycled glass, latex, and other reusable materials are used to produce tile and tile adhesives.
- Most all tile installation products are manufactured within 500 miles of the installation site reducing the environmental affects of transportation.
- Tile is the most sustainable of all finished surfaces.  The less often a surface needs to be replaced the better it is for the environment.  Ceramic tile on the Step Pyramid of Djoser has survived since the 3rd Dynasty around 2650 BC.

2) Improved Human Health (note: humans spend 90% of their time indoors on average)
- Tile improves indoor air quality because it has no VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Tile adhesives have little to no VOCs.  VOCs are a major contributor to poor indoor air quality and a significant cause of "sick building syndrome". This is because everything organic is burned away during the tile manufacturing process.
- Tile is inhospitable to dust mites, mold, germs, and bacteria.

3) Ratings Systems Compliance
- Tile can be a key part of LEED and other Rating System-Compliant Buildings via its inherent green attributes.
